London Marathon 2020

As I pointed out previously, John Vlahos – one of our trustees and an ex patient had entered the 2020 London Marathon. This year it was virtual and I am delighted to say that he completed it and is looking forward to doing another in 2021

On behalf of all , we would like to thank John for his Stirling  efforts

Virtual London Marathon 2020- Sunday 4th October

As you know we are still in the grips of the global pandemic and the London marathon was cancelled.  They have instituted a virtual one and a stalwart of the charity – John Vlahos is walking 26.2 miles in the Brecon Beacons for Face up on the 4th October.

If anyone would like to keep him company – great but if you could sponsor him either via our website or the Virgin Marathon website , that would be brilliant.  Every little penny goes a long way so your support is priceless.

Please support John who supports us.

Diolch yn fawr iawn

Cycling challenge 2020

The cycling challenge is completed  –  18 days – cycling 41.6 km ( 26 mile) per day, I cycled a total of 470 miles.  To date we have raised £2619 and I am personally really grateful.  I have a very sore rear but it was well worth it.

Some have questioned the value of the charity but this last donation sums it up and I know she won’t mind sharing this.  This is not about me but its the charity.

I am personally indebted to this charity! Without face up funded SLT and dietetic support my rehab/life would look very different. More indebted to the man on the bike. I really miss you, Mr Fardy!

Please spread the word and lets see if we can increase the donations which all go to Faceup

Mike Fardy 2.6 Challenge

As you know, the Geraint Thomas challenge was  duplicating a 12 hr shift  -he did it in one day !!   then duplicated this over 3 days.

There was more chance of snow freezing in hell than of me doing the same so I decided that as I could do a cycle marathon – 26 miles { 41.6 km]  in about 2 hrs ish, I would do a cycle marathon- so I first did 6 to duplicate one shift but then as part of the 2.6 challenge , as there was no London Marathon, I increased this in a moment of recklessness , so I am now doing 10 consecutive to fit in with this challenge and will add on 2 more so at the end I will have duplicated in my own way the time in the saddle of the great man – all for Face up Cymru

So it works out as one cycle marathon – 26 miles [ 41.6 km ]  each day over 18 days –  total 18  and hopefully if my rear will survive I will finish this a week today !!!

All the monies raised goes directly and totally to Face up

Please see the Just giving website link –

and pass it to all friends etc or if you would like to donate then see the button above

Any problems please get in touch- as for Elaine we are always there 24/7 for you

Elaine Palfrey’s birthday

Elaine's birthday

Elaine is one of our patients who I first met a few years ago – June 2005  !!!! She has been a stalwart supporter of faceup Cymru- always at our events and a passionate participant at our support group meetings.

She recently contacted us due to some problems she was having and we immediately got back to her with advice and support

29th April was her birthday so on behalf of us all at Faceup Cymru , we would like to say Penblwydd Hapus and I was able to see her – with social distancing and give her a bouquet from us all.

Take care and we will all catch up soon

Please remember we are always there for you  24 /7 so get in touch if needed

Face Cymru

All monies raised are solely and totally used for patient care and welfare

London marathon 2020

As you probably realize this is not going to take place this year so rather than nothing happening I will cycle the marathon distance for face up.
I’m currently doing a marathon a day so while I feel silly !!! I will do another on the 26th April for face up.
Your support would be tremendous

Cycling with Geraint

Face up Cymru is a charity I set up over 15 years ago to provide support to head and neck cancer patients. We don’t have the pull of other major cancer charities but we raise money to directly help. We have funded a dietician as well as two speech therapists. Also we have funded a dietetic assistant who goes around the ward making milk shakes. Patients love her rounds !! We have also bought equipment eg food blender. Lollipop maker – fantastic for patients who have such oral problems. You will know where your money is going. Please help us to help them.  To raise awareness and funds I’ve  walked up Kilimanjaro, then there was the Velothon and now one 2 hr stage on the turbo trainer around London – the saddle area is really sore so am looking forward to New York trailing well behind Geraint Thomas !!

As I didn’t make the first day of GT ride will do another marathon tomorrow ( Saturday)

Tuesday will do another

Then Thursday doing another jointly with Marie curie and my good friend Mark Lewis

Finally as there is no official London Marathon I’m doing the London course on Sunday.

So as Geraint Thomas – I will duplicate a 12 hr shift by doing 6 marathons- not as good as GT but doing my best.

Help me to help our cancer patients

please donate however small.

Mark Goodall RIP

Mark Goodall was a hardworking member of the medical records department at the University Dental Hospital in Cardiff. These people are fundamental to the workings of the service and are most certainly the unsung heroes.  Consultants always get the praise but without people like Mark we couldn’t do our job.  He certainly made every effort to support Face up

He was hardworking and always had a smile and a nice word for everyone and when I had to ask a favour of him, nothing was ever to much trouble.

It is therefore with great  sadness, that Mark unfortunately passed away recently and friends and colleagues have donated £500 of which  Face up have had £250 donated – the other £250 being given to the Addisons self help group, a disease that Mark suffered but took on the chin!!

This donation is so appreciated although it goes without saying I personally would rather have him here helping in his own way but this donation in his memory is greatly appreciated.

I do hope this donation will remind others of what Face up is trying to do  and every contribution – large or small will be used for the benefit of all our patients.

Our thoughts are with Marks family

Living with Cancer and Universal credit

We have received the following from a research company who are working on a project with Macmillan cancer support looking into the experiences people living with cancer have in trying to claim benefits.

At the moment we are desperately trying to reach out to people living with cancer who claim Universal Credit, in the hope of finding some who will be willing to share their stories with us to contribute to this valuable project. In all honesty, we are really struggling to find people to participate and are reaching out to organisations such as yourself in the hope that you might be able to help us in some way. Any help at all would be hugely appreciated, whether this is by:

  • Raising awareness of the project in support/ community groups or at events
  • Sharing information of the project with linked organisations who may have contact with people living with cancer
  • Displaying our poster (please see attached) either online, in a newsletter or in communal areas
  • Speaking to people personally who you might know who might be interested in taking part
