Supporting head and neck cancer patients through connection, community, and shared experience.
Faceup Cymru is a charity set up by healthcare professionals and patients to support them through the journey of managing and coming to terms with the diagnosis and treatment of head neck and oral cancer.
The aim is to provide support – pastoral, provide equipment as well as responding to patients needs. We are attempting to setup a “buddying group” where patients who have a newly diagnosed cancer can meet and talk with someone who has undergone this. Before the pandemic, we had bimonthly meetings which included invited speakers to talk on subjects of interest, we even had a laughter therapist to come and talk to us! The meetings also gave the opportunity to discuss what the patients wanted from these meetings and to discuss fundraising ideas and future events. We wish to provide opportunities for patients, their families, trustees, staff, volunteers and friends to share in, and sustain, the main aims of the charity.
Faceup Cymru wishes to work with people whose needs and wants are diverse and many.

We understand that patients who have head, neck or oral cancer require a great deal of support from friends and family but also from others who have experienced similar trauma.
- Families and friends of patients are also affected and we not only recognise the needs of patients but also the needs of helpers and supporters. So therefore a necessary part of the work of Faceup Cymru is ‘supporting the supporters’. This is why we have produced the videos outlining the patients journey – so that family and friends can attempt to understand the pathway.
- It is important to be aware that support can be provided by others who have experienced similar trauma – we’re building up lists of willing volunteers who have gone through this experience to share their thoughts and help as required.
